REVOLUTIONARY WAR MEDICINE
The members and guest of the Wiregrass Chapter were
informed and entertained at the February meeting with a
presentation of Revolutionary War Medicine. Judi Lee Stinnett
appeared in period attire representing her great-great-great
grand-uncle Augustus Lee Shippen, a surgeon's mate during
the Revolution and doctor after the war. His father was William
Shippen, one of the Director-Generals of The Hospital during
the war.

While in character, Augustus Lee Shippen spoke to the group
on the training required to become a surgeon either by formal
education or serving as an apprentice, health care of the
troops and demonstrated surgical procedures on volunteers
from the audience. Using genuine medical instruments from
the 1700's procedures such as blood letting, drawing, probing
for bullets, drilling holes in the scull to relieve pressure from
musket butt injuries and battlefield amputations were
explained and demonstrated.

Judi Lee Stinnett is an Enterprise native and retired educator
creating the American Studies class at Enterprise High
School and appears in character in the interactive classroom.
In her travels over the U.S. she looks for items to use in the
presentations, especially surgical instruments from the
Revolutionary period.
